My name is Heather and I’m the girl behind Laughing Lemons. So who am I? Well I find myself identifying with several labels in life such as a wife, stay-at-home mom, work-from-home mom, Christ follower, graphic designer, web designer, almost a New Yorker, southerner and the list could go on but what it comes down to is I’m just a girl who is trying to get through life by doing what is best for me and my family.
How It All Started
In 2011 my world was rocked when my first son, Hunter, was born. I had arranged with the company I was working for as a web designer, to work from home after he was born. I had no idea how rewarding and difficult it was going to be as a stay-at-home and work-from-home mom. Everyday was a struggle! I was having to learn how to be a mom and how to communicate with my coworkers. Did I mention that my husband had baby blues, yes it’s a real thing, and it meant that for a couple of months I had to pick up the slack with Hunter because he wasn’t able to. I remember days where I would start working after the 4am feeding just so I could meet deadlines.
Laughing Lemons was Created
In June of 2012 Laughing Lemons officially launched as a party invitation business. I had two other partners at the time and we were designing invitations and thank you notes for all of our friends who were having babies. It was a great creative outlet for us to do something different then what we were doing in our full time jobs. Unfortunately time got in the way and we never fully reached our full potential as an invitation business.
In January 2014 my second son, Miles, was born! It was the kickstart to a crazy year. We had our first ER visit with Hunter, our beloved beagles passed, my company downsized and as a result I lost my job. I was left with a choice of going back to work in an office setting or leaving our awesome community in NYC and moving in with my parents who live in Atlanta. We bought moving boxes and left our beloved NYC in August 2014 after living there for 7.5 years.
A New Laughing Lemons
After we settled in Atlanta I decided to take Laughing Lemons from an invitation business and turn it into a blog. As a stay-at-home mom and work-from-home mom I wanted to create a space where I could bridge this gap. There were days where I rarely had an adult conversation and I was lacking creativity. I needed to have both if I wanted to be a successful designer who could earn a living for my family. So in late 2015 the new and remodeled Laughing Lemons launched.
Life can be funny sometimes. So far 2016 has proved to be just as crazy as 2014. My freelancing career is finally starting to pick-up and I am finding myself working more then not working. Our daughter, Emory, was born in June and Hunter has started kindergarten. So here we are trying to figure out our new place in life and what God intends to do through us to help make this world a better place.
